Grab and BYD team up to accelerate EV adoption in Southeast Asia

Grab, a leading superapp in Southeast Asia, has announced a strategic partnership with BYD to expand access to up to 50,000 BYD electric vehicles (EVs) for Grab’s driver-partners across the region. This collaboration aims to increase the availability of green vehicles for Grab users, promoting sustainable transportation.

High upfront costs have been a significant barrier to EV adoption in Southeast Asia. Through this partnership, Grab and BYD aim to overcome this challenge by offering Grab’s fleet partners and driver-partners access to BYD vehicles at competitive rates and extended warranties on EV batteries.

Drivers can rent EVs from Grab’s fleet partners or seek financing support through Grab’s car ownership schemes. This initiative aligns with Grab’s commitment to helping driver-partners transition to zero-emission modes of transport. In countries like Singapore and Thailand, Grab users can also select the “Eco-Friendly Ride” option, prioritizing the allocation of green vehicles at no additional charge.

Liu Xueliang, General Manager of BYD Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We are excited to partner with Grab, the leading on-demand transport provider in Southeast Asia, to advance the transition to electric vehicles in the region.”

“BYD, the world’s leading new energy vehicle manufacturer, will integrate our technology with Grab’s to deliver a unique and unparalleled experience for its drivers and users. We remain dedicated to building a zero-emission ecosystem and supporting Grab’s fleet and driver partners. Through this collaboration, we aim to realize the vision of cooling the earth by one degree,” said Xueliang.

The partnership spans Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, covering a range of models including the DENZA D9, BYD ATTO3, BYD SEAL, and BYD M6. Grab plans to make DENZA, BYD’s premium electric vehicle brand, the cornerstone of its GrabExec fleet, featuring the DENZA D9 luxury seven-seater electric MPVs. These vehicles are designed with state-of-the-art features to offer unparalleled comfort and luxury. By integrating the DENZA D9 into its fleet, Grab aims to set a new standard in executive transportation, emphasizing convenience, style, and sustainability.

Chuck Kim, Managing Director of Group Business Development at Grab, highlighted the importance of sustainable growth in Southeast Asia, saying, “This collaboration enables us to drive the transition to EVs by lowering the financial barriers often associated with them. In the long run, this will deliver economic benefits to our driver-partners, including fuel cost savings.”

“We are confident that partnering with BYD, a reliable manufacturer committed to delivering high-quality vehicles and services, will allow us to showcase the benefits of EVs and make green transportation accessible to everyone,” said Kim.

This partnership marks a significant step towards a greener future for Southeast Asia, demonstrating the commitment of both Grab and BYD to sustainable transportation and environmental stewardship.
