IWS Seawalker wins 2025 Offshore Energy Vessel of the Year Award

The IWS Seawalker, a cutting-edge 90-meter Commissioning Service Operation Vessel (CSOV) designed and equipped by Kongsberg Maritime, has been named the 2025 Offshore Energy Vessel of the Year.  The prestigious award was presented at the Annual Offshore Support Journal Conference in London.

This accolade recognizes the innovative design and efficient operation of the IWS Seawalker, one of six “Skywalker Class” CSOVs in the Integrated Wind Solutions (IWS) fleet based in Norway.  The vessel’s design, based on Kongsberg Maritime’s UT 5519 DE platform, sets a new industry benchmark.

“We deeply value our strong partnership with IWS, and sharing this award is a tremendous honor,” said Ronny Pål Kvalsvik, Vice President of Kongsberg Ship Design.  “This series of vessels truly represents a game-changer for the offshore wind sector.”

The Skywalker Class is purpose-built for offshore wind operations, prioritizing reduced emissions and enhanced sustainability.  The UT 5519 DE’s unique double-ended hull form and propulsion system are the result of extensive R&D and operational experience, minimizing environmental impact while maximizing maneuverability and efficiency.

Kongsberg Maritime’s comprehensive contribution to all six Skywalker Class vessels includes design, system integration, and the main propulsion system.  Four US 255 L PM azimuth thrusters with permanent magnet (PM) motors provide a fully symmetrical propulsion and maneuvering system, complementing the symmetrical hull design.

The double-ended configuration excels in Dynamic Positioning (DP) and walk-to-work operations.  Kongsberg Maritime’s DP system enables automated transit between turbines along pre-defined routes, optimizing efficiency.

Equipped with IMO Tier 3 engines and a 2.2MWh battery pack, the Skywalker Class vessels also prioritize crew comfort and well-being, recognizing its crucial role in morale and productivity.
