DOTr building 200 social, farm-to-market port projects

“Under the Build, Better, More Program of the Marcos Jr. Administration, the DOTr-Maritime Sector is working on the completion of approximately 200 social port projects and farm-to-market ports by 2028,” Transportation Undersecretary for Maritime Elmer Sarmiento said during the Japan Transport and Tourism Research Institute ASEAN—India Regional Office (JTTRI- AIRO) Logistics Symposium.

Sarmiento pointed out that once these port projects are completed, it will promote connectivity between islands, and hasten economic activities, especially in rural and coastal areas.

As part of maritime infrastructure development, the transport executive cited, among others, the upgrades of various seaports in the country to maximize geographical advantages and to support the livelihood of farmers and fisherfolk.

Sarmiento likewise cited the P16.9 billion New Cebu International Container Port (NCICP) project, which will improve Cebu Province’s cargo handling capacity, alleviate congestion in the Cebu Baseport area and enhance the region’s overall port capacity.
