Cebu Pacific, the Philippines’ leading carrier, recently welcomed faculty and officials from Singapore Management University (SMU) and members of its International Advisory Council (IAC) for an exclusive visit to its Aplus hangar.
As the only airline selected for SMU’s two-day learning program in Manila, CEB provided an in-depth look at its sustainability initiatives, highlighting ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions and uphold responsible business practices.
CEB executives shared insights into the airline’s strategic approach to integrating sustainability across operations, with a strong emphasis on decarbonization, enhancing passenger experience, and strengthening corporate governance.
Sustainability at the Core of Operations
“Sustainability is not just a checkbox for us—it’s a commitment we take seriously,” said Xander Lao, CEB President and Chief Commercial Officer. “As the aviation industry evolves, we fully recognize our responsibility—not only to our passengers but also to the communities and ecosystems affected by air travel. That’s why we are relentless in embedding ESG principles across our operations.”
CEB outlined key sustainability strategies, including fuel-efficient aircraft and engine selection, optimized flight operations, proactive maintenance programs, and responsible waste management. These initiatives have positioned CEB as a leader in carbon efficiency among Philippine airlines. In 2024, the airline achieved its lowest carbon emission intensity since 2019, recording 80 grams of carbon dioxide per revenue passenger kilometer (RPK)—outperforming the global airline average of 90 grams per RPK.
Beyond Carbon Efficiency: Strengthening Governance and Passenger Experience
Beyond environmental efforts, CEB emphasized its commitment to strong corporate governance, cybersecurity, and risk management. Notably, the airline maintained a zero-data privacy breach record in 2024, reinforcing its industry-leading security standards.
Employee well-being also remains a priority, with expanded mental health programs, continuous training, and engagement initiatives fostering a safe and inclusive workplace.
On the passenger front, CEB’s dedication to elevating customer experience resulted in a satisfaction score of +28 in 2024—double the previous year’s rating.
Global Recognition for ESG Leadership
CEB’s sustainability leadership has earned international recognition, securing its highest-ever environmental, social, and governance (ESG) ratings from MSCI and S&P Global, placing the airline among the world’s top carriers for sustainability.
“SMU recognizes the crucial role airlines play in advancing sustainability, and Cebu Pacific’s approach demonstrates that environmental responsibility and operational efficiency can go hand in hand,” said Associate Professor Themin Suwardy, SMU’s Associate Provost (Postgraduate Programmes). “Our engagement with CEB aligns with SMU’s strategic pillar of Sustainable Living and has provided valuable insights into how the aviation industry can innovate for a sustainable future.”
With its ongoing commitment to sustainability, Cebu Pacific continues to set new benchmarks in responsible aviation, ensuring that air travel remains accessible, efficient, and environmentally responsible for every Juan.
