CMA CGM IRON, the group’s first dual-fuel methanol vessel, makes maiden call in Singapore

The CMA CGM Group has marked a significant milestone with the maiden call of its first dual-fuel methanol vessel, the CMA CGM IRON, at the Port of Singapore. This marks a crucial step towards the Group’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The CMA CGM IRON was built in Korea by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries and is the first of 12 dual-fuel methanol vessels in a new series, each with a capacity of 13,000 TEUs. The sister ships—CMA CGM COBALT, ARGON, PLATINUM, MERCURY, HELIUM, KRYPTON, THORIUM, OSMIUM, SILVER, COPPER, and GOLD—will be progressively deployed over the next two years, with deliveries scheduled for 2025 and 2026.

This new series of methanol-powered vessels is a major step forward in the CMA CGM Group’s strategy to decarbonize the shipping industry. It underscores the Group’s ongoing technological partnership with Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries and its strong ties to South Korea in the effort to reduce the environmental impact of maritime transportation.

The CMA CGM IRON will be deployed on the CIMEX1 service, which connects Asia with the Middle East Gulf region, further enhancing the Group’s commitment to sustainable shipping operations.

Xavier Leclercq, Vice President of Newbuilding at CMA CGM, remarked, “Our long-standing partnership with Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries has been key to overcoming the challenges of this new propulsion system. This engineering achievement brings us one step closer to our Net Zero Carbon goal and complements our existing fleet of dual-fuel gas-powered vessels.”
