New initiatives for Bicol development and growth

Members of the Bicol Regional Development Council (RDC) have expressed their heartfelt gratitude to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for his unwavering support of critical regional projects, particularly those focused on flood control and management in vulnerable areas.

These initiatives, according to the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), are poised to drive sustainable and inclusive growth across the region.

On Friday, March 7, President Marcos convened with Bicol RDC officials to review the region’s achievements, address pressing challenges, and discuss ongoing initiatives. The meeting brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including provincial leaders, mayors, national and regional government officials, and private sector representatives.

“This meeting with President Marcos marks a pivotal moment for the Bicol region. His steadfast support for key projects, such as flood control and management within the Bicol River basin, has strengthened our resolve to tackle significant development challenges. We remain committed not only to addressing these urgent issues but also to improving the overall quality of life for Bicolanos,” said NEDA Secretary Arsenio M. Balisacan.

The discussions underscored notable progress across various sectors, with a particular focus on infrastructure projects aimed at stimulating economic growth. However, the meeting also highlighted persistent challenges, such as recurring flooding that damages major thoroughfares like the Andaya and Daang Maharlika Highways. Concerns were also raised regarding the healthcare and education sectors.

In response, President Marcos emphasized the need for a comprehensive master plan to mitigate flooding risks and bolster the resilience of local communities. He also called for amendments to existing healthcare policies to enhance access and quality, ensuring that the needs of Bicolanos are met effectively.

The President further stressed the importance of fostering strong partnerships between local government units and national agencies to address regional challenges. His proactive approach is exemplified by the recent issuance of Executive Order No. 82, s. 2025, which empowers RDCs to play a more decisive role in shaping regional development agendas.

During the meeting, NEDA Undersecretary for the Regional Development Group Carlos Bernardo Abad Santos presented key developments in the economic and social sectors. Meanwhile, NEDA Undersecretary for the Investment Programming Group Joseph J. Capuno led discussions on ongoing projects and strategies to tackle critical issues identified during the session.
