IMO calls the tragic attack in Odessa port ‘distressing’

The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Dominguez, described as “distressing” the tragic attack in Odessa that claimed the lives of four seafarers.

“I am deeply distressed by the tragic loss of life in the recent attack on Odessa, which has claimed the lives of four seafarers. My heartfelt condolences go out to the families and loved ones of those who have been lost, as well as to those who have been injured,” said Dominguez in a statement issued in response to the tragic attack on March 11, 2025 in Odessa.

Four Syrian crew were killed and another two seafarers, one Syrian and one Ukrainian, were injured in a Russian missile strike on Odessa Port, Ukraine.

Dominguez noted that seafarers play an indispensable role in ensuring the uninterrupted flow of vital goods that sustain communities worldwide. It is unacceptable that they should ever be made the targets of conflicts in which they have no part. We must stand united in our commitment to their safety and well-being.

“I strongly urge all parties involved to take immediate action to prevent further acts of violence against innocent seafarers and the global shipping community. International shipping must not become a casualty of geopolitical tensions,” the statement added.

Dominguez emphasized that the IMO remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at enhancing the safety and security of everyone working within the maritime industry.
