The Philippine tourism industry remains a vital pillar of economic development, playing a significant role in driving national revenue and employment. Despite its resilience and steady recovery, the sector continues to grapple with a range of external challenges. In 2024, the Department of Tourism (DOT) reported 5.95 million international arrivals—falling short of the government’s target of 7.7 million. This shortfall is largely attributed to global headwinds, including inflationary pressures, geopolitical tensions, and climate-related disruptions that have affected travel demand worldwide.
Nevertheless, the sector’s growth trajectory remains promising. In 2023, the Philippine travel and tourism industry registered notable expansion, underscoring its integral role in the country’s economic output. The Philippines also secured the largest share of ASEAN tourism’s contribution to regional GDP, further cementing its strategic position within the Asia-Pacific travel market.
Recent policy reforms are poised to enhance the country’s global tourism appeal. Republic Act (RA) No. 12079, which grants Value-Added Tax (VAT) refunds for non-resident tourists, represents a significant step toward increasing the country’s competitiveness as a destination of choice.
In response to both the persistent challenges and emerging opportunities, the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP) is hosting a Luncheon Meeting with DOT Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco. This event seeks to provide an in-depth look at the Department’s strategic agenda to sustain tourism growth, address industry pain points, and unlock new areas for development.
The meeting will also serve as a platform to foster collaboration between public and private stakeholders. Key areas of discussion include improving tourism infrastructure, advancing digital transformation, and promoting sustainable tourism practices. These initiatives are critical to maintaining the Philippines’ competitive edge and ensuring long-term, inclusive growth in the sector.
Moreover, the event will highlight investment opportunities that can further strengthen the country’s position as a premier global tourist destination. By facilitating direct engagement between the DOT and the European business community, the luncheon aims to build stronger partnerships that support the continued evolution of the Philippine tourism landscape.
