Luncheon meeting with Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco

The Philippine tourism industry stands as a crucial pillar of the national economy, demonstrably fueling revenue generation and providing significant employment opportunities. Despite its inherent resilience, the sector navigated a complex landscape in 2024, recording 5.95 million international arrivals, a figure below the government’s ambitious 7.7 million target set by the Department of Tourism (DOT). This shortfall can be largely attributed to a confluence of external pressures, including persistent inflationary trends, evolving geopolitical dynamics, and increasing climate-related disruptions, all of which collectively dampened travel demand and impacted tourism operations.

However, the Philippine travel and tourism sector has exhibited notable recovery and strong growth potential. Evidencing this, the sector experienced substantial expansion in 2023, reaffirming its vital contribution to the nation’s overall economic output. Furthermore, the Philippines emerged as a key player within the ASEAN region, capturing the largest share of tourism’s contribution to the bloc’s gross domestic product (GDP), underscoring its strategic significance in the dynamic Asia-Pacific travel market. This positive growth trajectory is further bolstered by the implementation of Republic Act (RA) No. 12079, which introduces Value-Added Tax (VAT) refunds for non-resident tourists, strategically enhancing the Philippines’ attractiveness as a competitive global travel destination.

Recognizing both the existing challenges and the considerable opportunities within the sector, the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP) is proactively organizing a significant Luncheon Meeting featuring DOT Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco. This pivotal event aims to provide invaluable insights into the Agency’s strategic priorities and forward-looking initiatives designed to sustain robust tourism growth and effectively address prevailing industry hurdles. Moreover, the meeting will serve as a platform to explore potential synergistic collaborations between the public and private sectors, focusing on the critical areas of enhancing tourism infrastructure, accelerating digital transformation, and promoting sustainable tourism practices.

Beyond strategic discussions, the event will also facilitate a crucial dialogue on maximizing investment opportunities essential for maintaining the Philippines’ competitive edge as a premier tourist destination. This upcoming luncheon meeting represents a strategic avenue for the European business community to engage directly with the leadership of the DOT, fostering stronger partnerships and actively contributing to the long-term, sustainable growth and prosperity of the Philippine tourism industry.
