Singapore Changi Airport continues to hold its position as the largest airport in Southeast Asia, boasting a capacity of 3.5 million seats. This figure reflects a robust year-on-year growth of 5.7%, as indicated by OAG data.
Closely trailing Singapore are Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok Suvarnabhumi airports, both registering a capacity of 3.2 million seats, solidifying their status as the second and third busiest hubs in the region.
Within the top ten airports in Southeast Asia, Bangkok Don Mueang stands out with the most rapid expansion, demonstrating an impressive 11% increase in capacity compared to the previous year. Conversely, two airports within the top tier experienced a contraction in capacity compared to April 2024: Makassar (-0.4%) and Jakarta (-2.7%).
Indonesia commands the largest domestic aviation market in Southeast Asia, offering 8.4 million seats. This capacity is more than double that of Vietnam, the second-largest domestic market, which accounts for 3.7 million seats.
In terms of market expansion, Thailand exhibited the most significant growth in seat capacity, adding 402,000 seats compared to last year. The Philippines closely follows with an increase of 401,000 seats year-on-year. Notably, Timor-Leste has established a domestic market of 2,600 seats this month, a market that had no scheduled capacity in the corresponding period last year.
Southeast Asia’s capacity to the wider Asia Pacific region represents the largest international market, accounting for 8.1 million seats. This constitutes 48% of the total regional market of 16.9 million seats.
International capacity within Southeast Asia forms the next largest market, with 6.7 million seats, representing 39% of the sub-region’s total international capacity.
The African market demonstrates the most significant growth rate this month, with a substantial increase of 33.8% compared to the previous year, although it originates from a relatively small base. In contrast, the Middle East market shows the slowest growth rate, with a modest increase of 2.4% this month compared to last year.
