In a prompt and coordinated maritime response, the Coast Guard District Central Visayas (CGDCV) successfully facilitated the safe transfer of all 506 passengers from MV Lite Ferry 5, which ran aground in shallow waters near Jagna Port, Bohol, on the night of April 19, 2025.
The vessel, bound for Cagayan de Oro, was attempting to depart the port when it drifted approximately 200 meters into shallow waters due to low tide. A concerned citizen promptly alerted the Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) in Jagna. After confirming the situation with the vessel’s Master, the CGDCV immediately deployed its response teams.
By dawn on April 20, all passengers had been safely returned to shore without any reported injuries, thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Navy, Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) Jagna, Bantay Dagat, and local fisherfolk.
Initial inspections indicate no internal hull damage. However, a full marine safety and environmental assessment is currently underway. A tugboat from Cebu has been dispatched to assist in refloating the vessel.
The operation was carried out under the leadership of Commodore Weniel A. Azcuna, PCG, Commander of Coast Guard District Central Visayas. The incident underscores the PCG’s commitment to maritime safety, rapid emergency response, and effective inter-agency collaboration during unforeseen maritime incidents.
