DOTr revokes license of reckless bus driver, launches crackdown on road safety violations

The Department of Transportation (DOTr), through the Land Transportation Office (LTO), has revoked the driver’s license of Mark Louie A. Burgos, an ELS Bus Company driver who was caught in a viral video over-speeding on the road to La Union. The incident, which highlighted the dangers posed by undisciplined drivers, prompted swift action from the government.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon confirmed that Burgos’ license was revoked after his involvement in two separate road incidents in La Union. He emphasized that the DOTr would continue to take strong action against irresponsible drivers.

“We will not tolerate such behavior,” Secretary Dizon stated. “Under the directive of President Marcos, we are committed to protecting the public from reckless and abusive drivers. We will ensure that those who jeopardize the safety of commuters are held accountable.”

In a press briefing on Wednesday, Secretary Dizon also revealed the suspension of 671 driver’s licenses due to violations during the Holy Week. This includes 574 drivers who were involved in road crashes that resulted in injuries or fatalities. Additionally, 97 drivers of public utility vehicles (PUVs) were suspended after testing positive for illegal drugs, according to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).

“We are sending a strong message, especially to those operating PUVs — whether buses, jeepneys, or other forms of public transport. We will not tolerate these actions,” Dizon added. “To all drivers: it’s time to shape up. If you continue to disregard the rules, you risk losing your livelihood.”

In line with these efforts, the DOTr announced the formation of a new task force, composed of representatives from the DOTr, LTO, and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB). The task force will conduct a comprehensive review of the current road safety policies and the process for issuing driver’s licenses.

Secretary Dizon pointed out that the focus would not just be on public utility vehicles but also on motorcycles, which have contributed to numerous accidents due to the presence of unqualified or reckless drivers.

“We have to address the increasing number of accidents involving motorcycle riders, some of whom are unskilled or improperly licensed,” he said. “The goal is to ensure that our drivers are qualified, competent, and adhere to safety standards.”

Dizon also emphasized that the crackdown would not be limited to the Holy Week period. “This will be a continuous effort. So if you’re thinking about breaking the law or abusing the system, expect consequences. Losing your license and facing legal charges are very real possibilities,” he warned.

With these measures, the DOTr aims to improve road safety, ensure the accountability of drivers, and protect the lives of commuters across the country.
