President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru reaffirmed their nations’ commitment to strengthening diplomatic, political, security, and defense cooperation, as they approach the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2026.
President Marcos underscored the strong bilateral ties built over nearly seven decades, rooted in reconciliation, mutual respect, and collaboration in trade, development, security, and defense. He lauded Japan as a “reliable and steadfast partner,” noting its position as the Philippines’ second-largest economic partner.
The President reiterated his commitment to bolstering economic ties through mechanisms such as the Philippines-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement.Furthermore, President Marcos acknowledged Japan’s significant contributions to the Mindanao peace process. He also recognized Japan’s Official Security Assistance program, which has played a crucial role in modernizing the Department of National Defense and other Philippine security agencies.
