The Department of Transportation (DOTr), under the leadership of Secretary Vince Dizon, has pledged its support for the continued operation of motorcycle (MC) taxis, recognizing their vital role in urban mobility and livelihood.
This commitment was announced following a key meeting on Tuesday with George Royeca, founder of Angkas and a long-standing advocate for transport modernization and rider welfare. The discussion addressed urgent concerns raised by both riders—whose incomes depend on MC taxi services—and commuters, who rely on this affordable and efficient mode of transportation, especially across Metro Manila’s traffic-choked routes.
With the pilot program for motorcycle taxis having officially concluded in 2024 and legislative action still pending, Secretary Dizon acknowledged the urgency of ensuring service continuity. In response, he committed to issuing a Department Order that would legally allow MC taxi operations to continue while awaiting the passage of a permanent law.
“The long-term solution lies in legislation, which is why the DOTr is committed to working with Congress to craft a sustainable framework that protects and benefits both riders and commuters,” said Secretary Dizon.
He further emphasized that this move aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to ease the burden on commuters by expanding transport options, reducing travel time, and enabling more quality time for families.
However, Dizon stressed that all motorcycle taxi services must strictly comply with the latest Department Order on road safety, as well as existing standards covering vehicle roadworthiness and driver qualifications.
