NEA signs deal with Spanish Firm Osprel to explore power cable link for Camiguin

The National Electrification Administration (NEA) has officially entered into a feasibility study contract with Madrid-based engineering consultancy firm Osprel SL to assess the potential of connecting the island province of Camiguin to the Mindanao electricity grid via submarine power cables.

NEA Administrator Antonio Mariano Almeda and Osprel SL Chief Executive Officer Maria Inmaculada Blázquez Garcia led the ceremonial signing of the agreement held Tuesday at the NEA Building in Diliman, Quezon City. The event was witnessed by Department of Energy Assistant Secretary Mylene Capongcol and Spanish Ambassador to the Philippines Miguel Utray Delgado, alongside key energy stakeholders.

The collaboration marks a strategic step toward enhancing the reliability and sustainability of the energy supply in Camiguin, which is currently served solely by the Camiguin Electric Cooperative, Inc. (CAMELCO) based in Mambajao.

“This partnership will pave the way for a detailed technical study that includes electrical, bathymetric, meteorological, and environmental assessments necessary for developing a submarine power cable link,” said NEA Administrator Almeda. “The ultimate goal is to ensure a more stable electricity supply while supporting the integration of renewable energy sources into Camiguin’s power system.”

According to the contract, the feasibility study will deliver an optimized technical design for the submarine connection, setting the foundation for the project’s eventual construction.

The project is seen as a significant milestone in bolstering the energy infrastructure of Camiguin, an island province located in the Bohol Sea off the northern coast of Mindanao, with long-term benefits in energy security and sustainable development.
