From April 30 to May 3, nearly 4.3 million passengers took advantage of free rides on LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3, as part of a nationwide initiative to celebrate Labor Day, following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive.
The initiative led to record-breaking ridership, particularly on the MRT-3, which recorded its highest single-day passenger count since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, with over 481,000 riders on April 30 alone.
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon highlighted that the four-day free ride program was designed to honor the sacrifices of Filipino workers and alleviate the daily struggles of commuters.
“Free rides are a great help to our workers and regular commuters. So, by order of President Marcos, this will become an annual tradition every Labor Day as a thank you and recognition for the contribution of our workers to the country,” Secretary Dizon said.
