Pres. Marcos Jr. congratulates Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost on election as Pope Leo XIV

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. today extended his heartfelt congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost on his election as the new head of the Roman Catholic Church, who will take the name Pope Leo XIV.

“On behalf of the Philippines, I congratulate Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost on his election as the successor of Pope Francis and leader of the 1.4 billion-strong Catholic Church,” President Marcos stated on Friday.

As Pope Leo XIV assumes the significant role of Bishop of Rome, President Marcos conveyed his optimistic outlook for the new pontiff’s leadership. “I pray that he will continue to bring the Church closer to the poor and disadvantaged,” the President said, expressing his hope that Pope Leo XIV will uphold the Church’s enduring mission of compassion, service, and solidarity, particularly towards the marginalized.

President Marcos also emphasized the unified prayers of the Filipino people for the new Pope as he embarks on his pontificate. “The Filipino people are also praying for the new pope’s strength and good health as he leads the faithful with grace, wisdom, and compassion,” he added. “May his life and ministry inspire us to persevere in our daily walk with our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Pope Leo XIV’s ascension to the papacy has brought renewed hope to countless individuals globally, including the deeply devoted Catholic community in the Philippines, where the Church holds a central position in the nation’s spiritual and moral fabric.
