In response to a public advisory issued by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Regional Office VIII on May 15, 2025, a temporary three-ton maximum gross vehicle weight limit has been immediately put in place on the San Juanico Bridge. This urgent measure follows the identification of structural problems requiring immediate attention to ensure the safety of all bridge users.
The DPWH advisory specifies that only vehicles weighing three tons or less, typically small four-wheeled vehicles, are permitted to cross the iconic bridge. Strict adherence to the centerline and established traffic directions will be enforced.
For vehicles exceeding the three (3) ton limit, including large trucks, buses, and delivery vehicles, the DPWH advises utilizing Roll-On/Roll-Off (RORO) vessels as an alternative route to maintain seamless travel and connectivity between the islands of Samar and Leyte.
Recognizing the importance of continuous transportation, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) is actively collaborating with stakeholders to facilitate smooth operations at the following RORO-capable ports:
- Tacloban Port
- Calbayog Port
- Catbalogan Port
- Biliran Port
- Ormoc Port
- Manguinoo Port, Calbayog, Samar
- Hilongos Port
- Maasin Port
- Naval Port
- Palompon Port
- Calubian Port
Authorities are requesting the cooperation and understanding of all individuals and businesses affected by this temporary measure as essential maintenance work on the San Juanico Bridge is undertaken. The safety of the public remains the top priority.
