Temporary load limit on San Juanico Bridge causes truck congestion near Manguino-o Port

Approximately 180 trucks were observed backed up on both sides of the road near the Port of Manguino-o yesterday evening, May 16, 2025, at around 6:00 PM. The significant queue of vehicles, primarily destined for Leyte and Mindanao, is a direct result of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Regional Office VIII’s immediate implementation of a temporary three-ton load limit for all vehicles traversing the San Juanico Bridge.

The DPWH Regional Office VIII initiated the load restriction on May 15, 2025, following the discovery of issues concerning the “structural integrity” of the vital infrastructure. This action also aligns with the President’s directive for urgent structural repairs to the bridge. Adding to potential logistical challenges, a “total closure” of the San Juanico Bridge is anticipated shortly as repair work officially commences.

The San Juanico Bridge, inaugurated on July 2, 1973, serves as the sole land link between the provinces of Samar and Leyte, making it a crucial artery for the movement of goods and people in the region.

Reports indicate that several trucks, unable to meet the newly imposed weight restriction, were also lined up to return to Matnog. Authorities anticipate that the number of stranded trucks awaiting passage to Leyte and Mindanao will continue to rise in the coming days, potentially impacting the flow of essential goods and commerce.

To mitigate the impact, loading operations have reportedly begun at the Port of Manguino-o for trucks heading towards Ormoc, suggesting alternative routes and logistical solutions are being explored.

The DPWH Regional Office VIII has yet to release a detailed timeline for the bridge repairs and the expected duration of the load limit and potential total closure. Further updates are expected as the situation develops.
