DOTr explores Tacloban Port as alternate route amidst San Juanico bridge restrictions

Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Vince Dizon, accompanied by Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) General Manager Jay Santiago and other key DOTr officials, yesterday conducted an inspection of Tacloban Port. The visit was a direct response to the Department of Public Works and Highways’ (DPWH) recent advisory limiting the allowable tonnage for vehicles traversing the San Juanico Bridge.

The primary objective of the inspection was to thoroughly assess the port’s current capacity and surrounding infrastructure. Officials focused on identifying how Tacloban Port can effectively serve as a viable alternate route for cargo and heavy vehicles impacted by the bridge’s new restrictions. This proactive measure aims to ensure the continued, unimpeded flow of trade and mobility between the islands of Samar and Leyte by enhancing intermodal transport options.

Secretary Dizon also extended his inspection to Amandeyahan, another critical location affected by the DPWH’s bridge tonnage limitations.

Upon their arrival at Tacloban Airport, Secretary Dizon, General Manager Santiago, and the DOTr delegation were warmly welcomed by the Port Management Office of Eastern Leyte/Samar.
