SM Prime opens SM City Laoag, its first mall in Ilocos Norte

SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SM Prime), one of Southeast Asia’s leading integrated property developers, is set to open SM City Laoag on May 30, marking its inaugural entry into Ilocos Norte and the launch of its 88th shopping mall in the Philippines.

Strategically situated along Airport Road, just minutes from Laoag’s city center and the Laoag International Airport, SM City Laoag is positioned to become a key commercial hub in Northern Luzon. Surrounded by growing residential neighborhoods and established business zones, the mall is expected to serve as a new urban anchor for the region.

The three-level mall spans over 51,000 square meters of gross leasable area, with 90% of retail space already leased. It is anticipated to generate approximately 4,000 jobs for local residents across retail, operations, and support services.

“The opening of SM City Laoag reinforces our commitment to bring modern, accessible, and community-oriented retail experiences to fast-growing regions,” said Jeffrey Lim, President of SM Prime. “We’re proud to support Ilocos Norte’s accelerating economic growth and provide a dynamic space for both business and community.”

Ilocos Norte recorded an 8.6% economic growth rate in 2024, the highest among provinces in Region I, fueled by strong performance in services, tourism, and transportation.

SM City Laoag boasts a robust mix of anchors and tenants, including SM Store, SM Supermarket, SM Cinema, Ace Hardware, Pet Express, Miniso, and BDO. It also features a curated lineup of fashion and lifestyle brands such as Levi’s, Columbia, Adidas, Watsons, and Parfois, alongside global and local dining favorites like TGI Fridays, Vikings, Marugame Udon, Café Amian, and Milk Pot.

At the heart of the development is “Dap-ayan,” an open-air central park named after the Ilocano word for “gathering place.” This community space is designed to host events and provide a vibrant venue for leisure and cultural engagement.

Looking ahead, SM Prime is exploring the development of a complementary hotel in Laoag to capitalize on the region’s rising tourism and Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) potential, further strengthening its integrated presence in Northern Luzon.
