Alsons Consolidated Resources reaffirms commitment to reliable and sustainable energy

Alsons Consolidated Resources, Inc. (ACR), Mindanao’s first private-sector power generator, reaffirmed its commitment to delivering safe, reliable, and affordable energy across Mindanao and beyond during its Annual Stockholders’ Meeting on May 29.

In his address to shareholders, ACR Chairman Nicasio I. Alcantara emphasized the company’s strategic focus on balancing energy security with sustainability to support national development and meet the country’s growing demand for power.

“Looking ahead, we recognize the country’s growing need for reliable, sustainable energy,” Alcantara stated. “We intend to meet this by investing in renewables while pursuing technologies for stable and economic generation.”

Building a Balanced Energy Portfolio

In response to rising electricity demand and the global push for decarbonization, ACR continues to expand its diversified energy portfolio. The company currently operates a total of 428 megawatts (MW) of generating capacity through a mix of conventional and renewable assets.

Its core baseload plant, the 210 MW Sarangani Energy Corporation, utilizes clean coal circulating fluidized bed (CFB) technology to ensure a consistent power supply. ACR also provides critical ancillary services through its 100 MW Western Mindanao Power Corporation in Zamboanga and 103 MW Mapalad Power Corporation in Iligan.

ACR is nearing completion of the Bohol In-Island Diesel Power Station in Ubay, a strategic facility designed to deliver emergency and backup power during outages or natural calamities.

Accelerating Renewable Energy Projects

A significant milestone for ACR in 2024 was the commissioning of its first renewable energy project — the 14.5 MW Siguil Hydro Power Plant in Maasim, Sarangani. Now operating as a must-run unit in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM), the plant marks ACR’s growing commitment to green energy.

“Several other renewable projects are underway, including hydro facilities in Bago, Negros Occidental, and Siayan, Zamboanga del Norte, as well as solar developments in General Santos and Sarangani Province,” Alcantara shared.

These projects are part of ACR’s broader plan to contribute to the Philippines’ renewable energy targets by integrating new technologies and forging strategic partnerships.

Powering with Purpose: Community and Environmental Impact

Beyond energy generation, ACR continues to prioritize social and environmental responsibility. The company’s programs are geared toward inclusive growth and environmental stewardship.

In 2024, over 300 students in Sarangani, Zamboanga, and Iligan benefited from ACR’s scholarship and educational support initiatives. The company also expanded its Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) efforts to strengthen foundational literacy and numeracy in partner communities.

Environmental programs also gained momentum. Under the Watershed Enhancement Program (WEP), ACR planted more than 60,000 trees last year, with a notable 96% survival rate. The initiative also supports local livelihoods—17 indigenous farmer-partners harvested over 750 kilograms of coffee cherries, which were processed and sold as quality-grade coffee.

“Our commitment extends beyond power generation. For growth to be truly sustainable, it must go hand in hand with care for people and the planet,” Alcantara said.

ACR reported consolidated revenues of ₱12.5 billion in 2024, slightly up from ₱12.4 billion in 2023. Net income also rose to ₱2.5 billion, from ₱2.3 billion the previous year, reflecting the company’s consistent financial performance and the strength of its strategic direction.
