Philippine ports implement temporary suspension of bird and poultry product shipments

Following a directive from the Department of Agriculture (Memorandum Order No. 25) concerning the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1) virus, major Philippine port operators have announced a temporary suspension on the acceptance of certain reefer container shipments.

Asian Terminals Incorporated (ATI), serving Manila South Harbor (MSH), and International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI), operating the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT), have issued advisories to their clients. Effective April 28, 2025, the temporary suspension applies to reefer container shipments containing domestic and wild birds, as well as their slaughtered or produced products, or those imported from countries affected by H5N1.

This measure is being implemented to ensure compliance with national regulations and as a proactive step to prevent the entry of any health risks associated with infectious animal diseases into the Philippines.

The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) advises all affected port users to directly contact the respective terminal operators for further information and guidance:

  • For shipments handled by Manila South Harbor (MSH), please contact Asian Terminals Incorporated (ATI).
  • For shipments handled by Manila International Container Terminal (MICT), please contact International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI).

This temporary suspension is a crucial part of the ongoing efforts to safeguard public health and the country’s agricultural sector from the potential impact of the H5N1 virus.
