Jeepney drivers and operators who failed to consolidate will be given Provisional Authority (PA) so they can resume operation, according to Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon.
Dizon stressed that the public utility vehicle (PUV) modernization program is still open to individual jeepney drivers and operators, who failed to consolidate. They will be granted Provisional Authority so they can resume their operation, he said.
In saying this, Dizon also emphasized that the PUV modernization program will continue, but this time with stronger financial support for cooperatives and even those groups having difficulty paying for their jeepney units.
Dizon said President Marcos Jr. directed him to extend assistance not just to cooperatives that consolidated and joined the program but even to jeepney drivers and operators outside of the program as this is their main source of livelihood.
The DOTr continues to study the critical issues of the program, including the low consolidation rate, loan default, high cost of modern jeepneys, and route rationalization.
One option for DOTr is to open the modern jeepney units to other suppliers to bring down the cost.
