President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. affirmed on Wednesday that bilateral relations between the Philippines and Singapore are flourishing, delivering tangible benefits to both nations. His remarks came during a joint press conference with Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong following their productive bilateral meeting at Malacañang.
President Marcos highlighted the detailed discussions held on priority areas of cooperation, emphasizing comprehensive and constructive exchanges that build upon the outcomes of the recent ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur. “We exchanged views on what we can further do together to make the ASEAN Community stronger and more resilient,” the President stated.
A significant focus of the discussions was on strengthening economic ties. President Marcos expressed his hope that the Philippines would continue to be a prime investment destination for Singapore, one of the country’s most vital investors. He specifically urged Singapore to consider expanding its investments in the Philippines’ burgeoning renewable energy sector, identifying it as a crucial area for future collaboration.
On climate change mitigation, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to collaborating on a carbon credit mechanism. This initiative, in line with Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement, will commence with negotiations on an implementing arrangement, signaling a proactive approach to environmental sustainability.
Cooperation in the health sector was also a key agenda item. As both countries continue to promote collaboration, training, and exchanges between health experts, President Marcos expressed optimism for the swift conclusion of a bilateral agreement on health cooperation.
The President extended his gratitude to Singapore for its invaluable efforts in ensuring the survival and propagation of some of the Philippines’ endemic and endangered species, particularly the iconic Philippine Eagle. He also thanked Prime Minister Wong for ensuring the welfare of the approximately 200,000 Filipinos residing in Singapore, noting the importance of assisting in the reintegration of hardworking Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) upon completion of their contracts.
Regarding regional stability, President Marcos reiterated the Philippines’ unwavering commitment to advocating for a rules-based international order grounded in international law, equity, and justice, aiming to achieve peace and stability in the West Philippine Sea and the South China Sea.
President Marcos concluded by extending warm congratulations to the people of Singapore as they prepare to celebrate the 60th anniversary of their independence this August. “Your remarkable progress over six decades to become one of the world’s most stable, most admired countries is indeed an achievement worth celebrating and, for the Philippines, worth emulating,” the President remarked.
The robust discussions underscore the enduring partnership between the Philippines and Singapore, setting the stage for continued growth and collaboration across vital sectors for the mutual benefit of both nations.
