The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining uninterrupted operations and ensuring the safety of passengers and cargo amid the onset of the rainy season. With climate-resilient infrastructure and proactive measures in place, the agency assures the public that ports nationwide are fully equipped to handle adverse weather conditions.
“All PPA-managed ports are designed and built to withstand strong storms and torrential rains,” said PPA General Manager Jay Santiago. “While minor damages may occur, these do not disrupt port operations. Our infrastructure adheres to long-term climate resilience and sustainability standards.”
As part of its seasonal readiness program, the PPA is intensifying preventive maintenance activities such as environmental cleanup drives and drainage clearing to mitigate flooding risks. Port Management Offices (PMOs) are on standby to address any structural damage swiftly and efficiently.
To support passengers affected by weather-related travel disruptions, the PPA continues to implement its ‘PPA Lugaw’ initiative, offering food assistance to stranded individuals in coordination with local government units (LGUs).
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon emphasized the government’s unwavering stance on passenger safety, especially during inclement weather. “We will not compromise safety. Overloading will not be tolerated—no matter the circumstances. Inconvenience is unavoidable at times, but passenger safety is non-negotiable. Shipping lines will be held accountable for any violations,” Secretary Dizon said.
The PPA’s efforts are aligned with the directive of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to develop a safe, efficient, and reliable transportation system for all Filipinos. Modernization projects remain a top priority to enhance port infrastructure, ensuring smooth passenger movement and cargo operations even during typhoons and heavy rains.
The PPA urges the public to stay vigilant and regularly check official advisories, especially during the Habagat season. Real-time updates and 24/7 support are available through the PPA’s official social media channels and onsite personnel.
