New RORO port in Samar now operational, ensuring vital goods flow to Eastern Visayas

A new Roll-on/Roll-off (RORO) port in Samar is now fully operational, swiftly restoring the critical flow of food, essential goods, and crude supplies between Samar and Tacloban. The rapid construction, completed in just over a week, is a direct response to the temporary closure of the San Juanico Bridge to heavy vehicles.

RORO vessels have commenced carrying trucks loaded with vital provisions across the San Juanico Strait, connecting the Port of Amendayehan in Samar to Tacloban and vice versa. This new maritime route ensures that Eastern Visayas communities continue receiving necessary supplies without interruption.

The expedited development is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the Department of Transportation (DOTr), the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), and the local governments of Tacloban and Samar. This swift action directly addresses the president’s directive to resolve transportation challenges quickly.

“The President emphasized the need to accelerate construction to ensure the continuous delivery of goods and services for our countrymen,” stated Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon. “We are immensely grateful for the prompt action of the national agencies, in collaboration with the provincial and local governments of Samar and Tacloban, in resolving this problem immediately.”

The successful activation of the RORO port underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring the unhampered movement of essential goods and supporting the economic well-being of the region.
