Century Pacific Food wins two prestigious awards for sustainable practices

Century Pacific Food, Inc., one of the Philippines’ leading food companies, has reinforced its commitment to sustainability with its pioneering Sustenido Bulan program, receiving two major accolades at the 2025 Tambuli Awards. The company was awarded Gold for Inclusive Growth and Silver for Care for the Environment, recognizing its significant contributions toward sustainable sardine fishing practices and community empowerment in Bulan, Sorsogon.

Launched to support smallholder fisherfolk in the region, Sustenido Bulan has delivered tangible outcomes, including a 10% reduction in fish rejection rates, which helped decrease food and marine waste. The initiative has also positively impacted the local economy, benefiting over 200 fisherfolk and generating more than 850 jobs. In addition, CNPF has produced over 65 million servings of quality sardines, helping strengthen the nation’s food security.

In line with its commitment to social responsibility, CNPF also extended its flagship school feeding program, Kain Po, through its RSPo Foundation. The program has successfully reached over 1,000 children in Bulan, providing them with nutritious, protein-rich meals that contribute to their overall well-being.

A Holistic Approach to Sustainable Growth

Through its collaboration with the local government and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, CNPF has helped deliver training on sustainable fishing practices, ensuring long-term sustainability in the industry. Sardines, one of the Philippines’ most vital food staples, are found in 9 out of 10 households (Oceana Philippines, 2017). However, the industry has faced mounting challenges, including declining catch volumes due to climate change, unsustainable practices, and seasonal fluctuations. With major fishing grounds now undergoing rehabilitation, Sustenido Bulan was launched to ease the pressure on traditional fishing sources and promote more sustainable practices that benefit both the community and the company.

Business and Social Synergy

The recognition at the Tambuli Awards highlights the synergies between business success and corporate responsibility. “These Tambuli awards represent much more than recognition—they reflect the values we strive to uphold,” said Ronald M. Agoncillo, Vice President and General Manager of Sardines. “What began as a necessity evolved into a partnership and mission. Through Sustenido Bulan, we didn’t just improve fish quality or create jobs—we empowered lives.”

CNPF’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Greg H. Banzon, further emphasized that sustainability can drive both positive social and environmental outcomes as well as business growth. “Too often, businesses see sustainability as an expense. Sustenido Bulan demonstrates that real, lasting impact can foster shared prosperity. When communities and companies collaborate, inclusive growth and environmental stewardship go hand in hand.”

Continued Commitment to Responsible Growth

Century Pacific Food, Inc. remains dedicated to scaling the Sustenido Bulan model and furthering its mission to nourish lives responsibly and sustainably. The company continues to invest in programs that create lasting positive impact for both people and the planet, reinforcing its commitment to a sustainable future for the fishing industry and communities across the Philippines.
