Transportation Secretary confident MRT-7 to be operational by 2027

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon announced with strong confidence that the Metro Rail Transit Line 7 (MRT-7) is poised for completion and full operation by 2027, or even before the conclusion of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s term. This accelerated timeline marks a significant milestone for a project that has faced over a decade of delays, aligning with the President’s directive to expedite critical infrastructure aimed at enhancing commuter welfare.

Following a comprehensive inspection of the MRT-7 depot on Quirino Highway, Quezon City, Batasan Station, and other key facilities last Tuesday, Secretary Dizon underscored the project’s rapid progress. “I am confident that MRT-7 will be finished before the end of President Bongbong Marcos’ term. So by 2027, many of our countrymen will be able to ride it,” stated Secretary Dizon.

The completion of MRT-7 is expected to dramatically transform daily commutes for hundreds of thousands of Filipinos. Passengers will experience significantly faster travel times from North Avenue in Quezon City to San Jose Del Monte in Bulacan.

Furthermore, the new rail line is projected to substantially reduce heavy traffic congestion, particularly along Commonwealth Avenue, freeing up valuable time for commuters to relax and spend with their families. “This is a big thing for our countrymen, the time that you can save. They don’t have to wake up at dawn, and the traffic that will be reduced in the Commonwealth is huge,” Secretary Dizon emphasized.

A crucial component for seamless inter-connectivity, the Common Station, is also a priority for completion. Secretary Dizon highlighted its importance, stating, “Common Station must follow the timeline of MRT-7 so that when MRT-7 is done, the connection of MRT-7, MRT-3, and LRT-1 will be very easy.” This integrated approach ensures effortless transfers for passengers across multiple rail lines.

Secretary Dizon lauded the collaboration with San Miguel Corporation, citing the MRT-7 project as a “best practice” that will serve as a model for future rail initiatives by the Department of Transportation (DOTr). He also highlighted the train line’s advanced features, including wide train cars, the absence of overhead electrical lines, spacious stations, and full PWD-friendly accessibility with escalators and elevators at every station.

Currently, the overall progress of the MRT-7 stands at 83.08%. Upon its operational launch, the system is projected to serve an impressive 600,000 passengers per day in its first year, significantly easing the burden of daily travel for millions.
