DOE commences Fourth Green Energy Auction to accelerate renewable energy development

The Department of Energy (DOE) has officially launched the Fourth Round of the Green Energy Auction (GEA-4), signaling a pivotal advancement in the Philippines’ efforts to rapidly expand and integrate renewable energy (RE) resources nationwide. This initiative underscores the DOE’s steadfast commitment to bolstering national energy security and sustainability through a transparent and highly competitive procurement process.

The formal commencement of GEA-4 took place with the issuance of the Notice of Auction (NOA) and Terms of Reference (TOR) on March 29, 2025. This was followed by crucial updates provided through Advisory Nos. 1 and 2, released on May 28, 2025, and June 11, 2025, respectively, ensuring all stakeholders are well-informed.

Further solidifying the auction’s framework, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) published the Green Energy Auction Reserve (GEAR) Prices on its official website on June 13, 2025, via ERC Resolution No. 9, Series of 2025. These established prices will serve as the foundational benchmark for all bid offers submitted during GEA-4. In line with the NOA and TOR, the registration period for Qualified Suppliers (QS) is set to begin one working day after the release of these GEAR Prices.

GEA-4 represents a significant leap towards achieving a more sustainable and resilient energy future for the Philippines. This round targets over 10 gigawatts (GW) of solar and wind capacity, with commercial operations slated to begin between 2026 and 2029. The ambitious goal of GEA-4 is to substantially increase the share of renewable energy in the country’s overall energy mix, simultaneously strengthening grid reliability and ensuring long-term energy security for the nation.

Beyond merely attracting increased investment in the renewable energy sector, GEA-4 reinforces the DOE’s unwavering dedication to fostering competitive, transparent, and efficient energy procurement practices, paving the way for a greener and more secure energy landscape in the Philippines.
