In direct response to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive, the Department of Energy (DOE), in close collaboration with the National Electrification Administration (NEA), announces the successful implementation of urgent measures to stabilize and restore electricity supply to the Province of Siquijor.
Energy Officer-in-Charge Sharon S. Garin confirmed that the concerted efforts of the DOE, NEA, and the Provincial Government of Siquijor have led to a significant improvement in the island’s power situation. As of June 14, 2025, the province’s total available power capacity has reached an impressive 10.6 megawatts (MW).
This critical capacity comes from the operational generation units of Siquijor Island Power Corporation (SIPCOR), the successful synchronization of 1.7 MW generator sets deployed by Palawan Electric Cooperative, Inc. (PALECO), and 1.7 MW from SIPCOR’s rented generator sets.
Repair work on SIPCOR’s remaining Units 7 and 8 is progressing swiftly, with completion expected by June 18 for Unit 8 and July 18 for Unit 7, further bolstering the island’s energy reserves. To ensure long-term energy security, the DOE will rigorously monitor SIPCOR’s compliance with Energy Regulatory Commission regulations, the timely repair of its genset units, and consistent fuel supply delivery.
SIPCOR has committed to establishing a minimum 10-day fuel inventory within the next ten days to guarantee uninterrupted operations. The DOE will also work closely with the Province of Siquijor Electric Cooperative, Inc. (PROSIELCO) following the issuance of a Certificate of Conformity by NEA, enabling the competitive selection process for the procurement of 5-11 MW of baseload power supply.
“We commend the swift and coordinated action of NEA, SIPCOR, the Provincial Government of Siquijor, and our partner electric cooperatives in bringing relief to the people of Siquijor,” stated OIC Garin. “This is a clear demonstration of the government’s unwavering commitment to ensure energy security and equitable access to electricity, especially in remote and island provinces.”
Beyond immediate stabilization, the DOE is advancing sustainable energy solutions for Siquijor. A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) will soon be signed with the Provincial Government of Siquijor to provide technical assistance for the deployment of solar energy solutions in government buildings, promoting energy efficiency and conservation.
Furthermore, a ground-mounted solar power project in the Municipality of Maria, with an indicative capacity of 5 MW, is on track for timely implementation and targeted commissioning by November 2026. Civil works are underway, alongside essential Distribution Impact Study (DIS) and System Impact Study (SIS) assessments.
The DOE is also coordinating with the National Transmission Corporation (TransCo) and PROSIELCO on the design and implementation of a looping configuration for Siquijor’s transmission system. This enhancement is vital for improving reliability, reducing outage risks, providing alternate power flow paths, and supporting the integration of renewable energy sources to meet the province’s growing electricity demand.
The DOE will continue its diligent monitoring of Siquijor’s power situation, collaborating closely with all stakeholders to ensure the successful execution of action plans for long-term energy sustainability.
