Effective today, June 20, 2025, all students are granted an increased 50 percent discount on their train rides (MRT-3, LRT-1, LRT-2) as part of a government subsidy to help reduce the financial burden during the start of the school year.
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said the increased discount—from 20 percent to 50 percent—is in line with the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to the MRT-3, Light Rail Transit Administration (LRTA), and Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) to help ease expenses as students return to school starting Monday, June 23, 2025. The program will run until 2028, or the end of President Marcos’s term.
“This is a big help to families especially those having difficulty sending their children to school. The savings can be used for other school projects and allowance,” said Dizon at the launch of the program at the LRT-2 Antipolo station on June 20, 2025. The LRT-2 line has the highest student ridership, as it passes through the University Belt in Manila.
The 50 percent discount applies to all students, including those pursuing postgraduate studies, who purchase single-journey tickets at the train ticket counters. The discount is not applicable to Beep cards. The discounted ticket can also be availed of on weekends.
