Filipino seafarers rescued from Haiti captivity welcomed home by DMW

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) on Thursday formally welcomed two Filipino seafarers, crew members of the MV Century Royal, at its Central Office following their safe return from captivity in Haiti. The seafarers were held hostage since early April 2025.

The DMW’s swift action aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to provide comprehensive assistance to distressed Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and ensure their successful reintegration into society.

Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac, joined by Undersecretaries Bernard P. Olalia and Felicitas Q. Bay, Assistant Secretary Maria Regina Galias, and other DMW Directors, personally met with the rescued seafarers, the wives of their fellow crew members, and representatives from the involved manning agency.

“The President was very glad to hear of your safe release. His words were, ‘Very good.’ Rest assured, the government is here to support you and will assist in your recovery and reintegration,” Secretary Cacdac conveyed during the welcome.

The DMW has already provided initial financial assistance of ₱75,000 each to the seafarers under the AKSYON Fund upon their respective arrivals on May 23 and June 17, 2025. The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) is also preparing to extend additional support, particularly for the seafarers’ children, further demonstrating the government’s commitment to their well-being.

The DMW is working closely with the seafarers’ manning agency to ensure their full recovery and provide all necessary support as they transition back to their lives in the Philippines.
