Osaka-based Kanavia Corp. to invest in waste-to-energy project in Manila

Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Friday announced a significant investment plan by Japan’s Kanadevia Corporation for a pioneering Waste-to-Energy (WtE) project, set to transform Manila’s waste management system through sustainable, large-scale energy recovery.

“I’m pleased to share that we are working with Japan’s Kanadevia Corporation on a landmark Waste-to-Energy project for Manila. This initiative will turn thousands of tons of waste into clean energy, reduce flooding, create jobs, and help clean up communities,” President Marcos stated in an announcement on social media.

The President’s declaration came during the second day of his working visit in Osaka, Japan, where he engaged with Kanadevia Corporation executives to finalize the investment plan. The WtE project will be executed in partnership with Phil. Ecology Systems Corp. (PhilEco), a leading Philippine entity in integrated sanitary solid waste management and disposal.

Kanadevia Corporation, headquartered in Osaka, is renowned for its high-tech environmental systems, including advanced facilities for waste-to-energy conversion, seawater desalination, and wastewater treatment. In this collaboration, Kanadevia will serve as the Japanese proponent, co-investor, and technology provider for the initiative.

Strategically located in Smokey Mountain, the Manila Waste-to-Energy project is envisioned as a groundbreaking infrastructure development addressing multiple national priorities. These include enhancing the waste disposal system, generating clean power, attracting crucial foreign direct investments, creating employment opportunities, and bolstering environmental sustainability efforts across the nation.

In addition to the WtE discussions, President Marcos also held a productive meeting with leaders from Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. A globally recognized Japanese shipbuilder since 1917, Tsuneishi accounts for a significant share of the international market for medium-sized bulk carriers and specializes in container ships and tankers, operating shipyards in the Philippines, Japan, and China.

Demonstrating its commitment to strengthening its presence in the Philippines, Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. is embarking on the fifth phase of expansion for its shipyard in Balamban, Cebu. This expansion includes substantial investments in new capital equipment and enhanced research and development capabilities, further solidifying the Philippines’ role in the global shipbuilding industry.

These strategic collaborations underscore the deepening economic ties between the Philippines and Japan, fostering sustainable development and economic prosperity for both nations.
