DPWH accelerates construction of new diversion road in Tupi

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is making significant strides in the construction of a vital new diversion road in the municipality of Tupi, South Cotabato. This strategic infrastructure project is set to substantially alleviate traffic congestion and provide a more convenient and efficient travel experience for residents and commuters.

In a report to Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, DPWH Region 12 Director Basir M. Ibrahim highlighted that the 3.12-kilometer bypass, situated along the Banga-Tupi-Malungon Road, is specifically designed to enhance mobility and contribute to higher income returns for local farmers and business owners within the area.

“To realize the Bagong Pilipinas vision of Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., the DPWH ensures that road networks provide faster trips without compromising the safety of travelers, especially in rural areas where the roads also serve as a lifeline by linking locals to essential services and facilitating economic development,” stated Secretary Bonoan, underscoring the project’s alignment with national development goals.

Beyond its economic advantages, the new diversion road is also expected to mitigate wear and tear on the main highway by offering an alternative route capable of accommodating heavy trucks, thus preserving the existing road infrastructure.

Costing an estimated ₱192 million, the comprehensive project includes not only the road construction but also the development of a lined canal and innovative slope protection measures utilizing coco-nets and coco-logs. These environmentally friendly materials, made from coconut coir fiber, are designed as geonets to effectively hold soil in place and prevent erosion, ensuring the long-term stability and sustainability of the road.

Concurrently, the “Build Better More Program” is also advancing along the Banga-Tupi-Malungon Road, with an additional slope protection project amounting to ₱48 million, funded under the 2024 General Appropriations Act (GAA). This complementary initiative further reinforces the region’s infrastructure resilience.

With an impressive accomplishment rate of 68.30 percent, the diversion road project is on track for completion within the third quarter of 2025, promising a significant positive impact on Tupi and its surrounding communities.
