DOT convenes stakeholders for assessment of tourism development plan 2023-2028

The Department of Tourism (DOT) has convened a wide array of tourism stakeholders for the National Tourism Development Plan (NTDP) 2023-2028 Assessment Forum, marking a crucial step in evaluating the nation’s strategic tourism roadmap.

The forum saw robust participation from major tourism industry associations, travel and tour operators, representatives from the transport sector (including aviation), MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) organizers, accommodation providers, the academe, and various private organizations. Through focused group discussions (FGDs), these stakeholders actively contributed to the midterm assessment of the NTDP, scrutinizing its accomplishments, identifying challenges, and formulating key recommendations to enhance the plan’s competitiveness and sustainability.

Tourism Undersecretary for Tourism Development Planning Verna Buensuceso underscored the forum’s core objective in her overview. “It’s important for us to emphasize that our shared goal goes beyond simply increasing our arrival numbers. So, our focus is on delivering experiences that truly matter – high-quality, meaningful, and inclusive tourism that benefits visitors, local communities, and the broader economy alike. Collaboration in all these things will be very essential, and this means building strong partnerships with you, our tourism industry partners,” said Undersecretary Buensuceso.

The Tourism Promotions Board–Philippines, an attached agency of the DOT, led by Chief Operating Officer Marga Nograles, presented an insightful overview of Performance Markets and Actions Moving Forward. Break-out sessions for each sector were expertly facilitated by industry veteran Dr. Maria Cherry Lyn Rodolfo, ensuring targeted and productive discussions.

A significant theme throughout the forum was the strengthening of partnerships with the private sector. Discussions centered on promoting destinations’ safety, accessibility, and competitiveness, while simultaneously curating authentic and memorable experiences that showcase the very best of the Philippines.

Under the leadership of Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, the DOT has championed trailblazing initiatives and programs designed to position the Philippines as a premier destination for all, significantly enhancing the overall tourism experience. The Department has expanded its mandate beyond mere promotion, actively working to equalize tourism development across all regions by deeply involving grassroots communities.

Also joining the critical discussions were DOT officials Undersecretary Shahlimar Hofer Tamano, Assistant Secretaries Czarina Zara-Loyola, Judilyn Quiachon, Christine Joy Cari, and OIC-Director Alex Macatuno.

The insights and recommendations gleaned from this comprehensive assessment forum will be instrumental in refining the NTDP 2023-2028, ensuring its continued relevance and effectiveness in fostering a vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive Philippine tourism industry.
