PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk announced the successful operationalization of its Lumut Balai Unit 2 Geothermal Power Plant, adding a significant 55 megawatts (MW) to the national grid. This achievement follows the successful completion of a rigorous 72-hour continuous Unit Rated Capacity (URC) test and the official issuance of the Commissioning Certificate (Sertifikat Laik Operasi/SLO) on June 29, 2025.
The URC test, conducted from June 26-29, 2025, confirmed the plant’s stable performance and full adherence to all technical specifications. With the signing of the URC report and the subsequent issuance of the Commissioning Certificate, Lumut Balai Unit 2 is now seamlessly integrated and synchronized with Indonesia’s national electricity grid, marking a crucial step in enhancing the country’s renewable energy mix. This milestone also represents a significant advancement in PGE’s strategy for asset monetization through electricity sales to PLN.
With the addition of Lumut Balai Unit 2, PGE now manages a total installed capacity of 727.5 MW across its six operational areas, solidifying its position as a leading geothermal energy producer.
Julfi Hadi, President Director of PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk, expressed his gratitude for the collaborative effort behind this success. “We are grateful that the power generation at Lumut Balai Unit 2 can now operate consistently and at full capacity. This is part of PGE’s long-term commitment to providing reliable and sustainable clean energy through geothermal power,” said Mr. Hadi. “With this additional capacity, we are not only strengthening the national energy mix but also moving closer to our goal of reaching 1 gigawatt (GW) of independently-managed installed capacity within the next 2-3 years.”
Mr. Hadi further emphasized that this operational milestone underscores PGE’s concrete contribution towards achieving Indonesia’s ambitious national target of expanding renewable energy generation capacity by up to 76% in the 2025–2034 period. “Looking ahead, we are optimistic about continuing to support the acceleration of the national geothermal capacity expansion target of 5.2 GW during that period,” he added.
In line with its growth strategy, PGE is actively developing several other strategic projects. These include the Hululais Geothermal Power Plant Units 1 & 2 (110 MW) and a number of cogeneration projects with a combined capacity of 230 MW. Most recently, on June 26, PGE inaugurated the exploration phase (green field) of the Gunung Tiga geothermal power plant in Lampung, which holds a potential capacity of 55 MW, further demonstrating PGE’s commitment to expanding Indonesia’s geothermal footprint.
