PBBM launches 50% discount for seniors, PWDs in rail lines

Senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs) can now enjoy as much as 50 percent discount in Metro Manila rail lines as President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expanded on Wednesday the coverage of fare cut to reduce transport costs to priority passengers.

The expanded discount coverage initiative follows President Marcos’ order in June to increase fare discounts to students from 20 percent to 50 percent in all Metro Manila rail lines including LRT-1, LRT-2 and MRT-3.

The Chief Executive said he instructed Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon to make train fares affordable for seniors and PWDs so they will have more budget to spend for their medical needs.

“Thirteen million senior citizens and seven million PWDs are going to benefit annually from this program,” the President said during his visit in MRT-3 Santolan-Anapolis Station

The president said that students, PWDs and senior citizens need fare assistance because they have limited income.

Secretary Dizon said the government will always find ways to ease the daily burden of commuters, including the priority sector.

Similar to the 50 percent student discount, seniors and PWDs can avail less of train fares everyday, including weekends and holidays, until 2028.

To avail of the 50 percent discount, senior citizens and PWDs only need to present IDs at ticket counters.

The 50 percent discount will automatically be applied using the registered white Beep cards for PWDs and senior citizens. For those who have not applied for white Beep cards yet, discounts may also be availed using single journey tickets.
