PPA activates nationwide emergency and safety protocols in anticipation of tropical depression Crising

The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) today announced the nationwide activation of its emergency and safety protocols across all Port Management Offices (PMOs) in response to the looming threat of Tropical Depression (TD) Crising. The directive, issued by PPA General Manager Jay Santiago, underscores the agency’s commitment to ensuring public safety, safeguarding cargo, and maintaining essential port operations amidst the inclement weather.

“All PMOs are instructed to remain on high alert and implement all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of lives, cargo, and port infrastructure, and to mitigate the impact of the storm,” stated GM Santiago. This proactive measure aligns with the directive from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Department of Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon to prioritize public welfare and ensure the continuity of transport services during hazardous weather conditions.

According to the 11:00 AM bulletin from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 has been raised over several areas, including the southern portion of Batanes, Cagayan (including Babuyan Islands), Isabela, Quirino, the northeastern portion of Nueva Vizcaya, the northern portion of Aurora, Apayao, Abra, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Ilocos Norte, the northern portion of Ilocos Sur, and the northern and eastern portions of Catanduanes. All ports within and near these affected regions are on heightened alert.

GM Santiago also urged all shipping lines to promptly inform passengers of any trip cancellations or delays. “Some shipping lines have already issued notifications, but there are still others that fail to do so. That’s what we’re reminding them about. We strongly advise passengers to confirm the status of their trips directly with the shipping companies,” he emphasized, aiming to prevent unnecessary port visits and the accumulation of stranded travelers.

In preparation for the storm’s impact, the PPA is actively coordinating with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to facilitate the efficient handling and distribution of relief goods. Critical emergency supplies and equipment, including power generators, communication tools, first aid kits, and provisions of food and water, have been strategically prepositioned. Efforts are also underway to secure port facilities, cargo, and vessels to minimize potential damage. Dedicated focal persons have been assigned to monitor operations round-the-clock, ensuring immediate response to any developments.

Passengers are encouraged to monitor the official social media pages of the Philippine Ports Authority for real-time updates and advisories on port and voyage status.
