Labor rights are human rights! This is the reminder that echoed at the gathering of employers at the opening for the 46th National Conference of Employers (NCE) with the theme โLeading Transitions for a Sustainable Future.โ
โWe need to remember: Labor rights are human rights,โ pointed out Edgardo G. Lacson in an opening speech before members of the Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP) on July 29, 2025 at the Manila Hotel.
In this time, Lacson said that employers are called to understand the world in transitionโand to respond with conviction, courage, and clarity – for a sustainable future.
He said that business is at the crossroads of three transformative global shifts, each with the power to disrupt industries, redefine work, and reshape society: digital and AI-driven transformation; sustainability and climate transition; and geopolitical and economic rebalancing.
Despite these shifts, the business leader said that employers have an even greater chance to lead with purpose and accountability. โAs we navigate change, let us build together a future that is not only sustainable, but also just and inclusiveโfor business, for workers, and for generations to come,โ Lacson added.
According to Lacson, the rise of AI and emerging technologies is not something to worry in terms of job losses, but should rather be seen as potential to elevate work, boost productivity, and to empower people.
With investments in education, skills development, and innovation ecosystems, he said every Filipino in the workforce will benefit in the digital economy.
โThe call for greater equity, inclusion, and justice in our workplaces is not optionalโit is urgent and necessary,โ he said.
