Pres. Marcos Jr. vows accountability for poor water service affecting 6 million households

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. announced a decisive government crackdown on water districts and their private partners responsible for inadequate water delivery to more than six million households nationwide. The President’s strong remarks came during his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday, where he expressed significant dismay over the widespread water crisis impacting communities outside Metro Manila.

“We have received numerous complaints that water isn’t even reaching their taps,” President Marcos stated, highlighting the severity of the issue. He added, “The scope of these complaints indicates that over six million consumers across the country are currently affected. I have seen the report.”

Despite the administration’s ongoing initiatives to secure clean water supplies, including the installation of filtration systems for island residents, consistent water access remains a significant hurdle for many Filipinos.

“The LWUA [Local Water Utilities Administration] is now taking effective measures against the failing service of water districts and their joint venture partners,” President Marcos affirmed. He emphasized the government’s commitment to justice, declaring, “Above all, we will ensure that those who have neglected and fallen short in this vital public service will be held accountable,” a statement that drew applause and cheers from the audience.

The President’s directive follows his discovery of insufficient water supply in several schools during an inspection on June 9, prompting an immediate order to LWUA to restore service to affected educational institutions. Furthermore, at the President’s behest, LWUA has instructed all 532 water districts under its jurisdiction outside Metro Manila to submit comprehensive reports on their current water supply status.

President Marcos concluded by assuring the public that LWUA is actively working to rectify the subpar services provided by water districts and their private sector collaborators. “LWUA will ensure that water services for millions of our countrymen are put in order and that prices are made more affordable,” he stated.
