The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced today a comprehensive plan to upgrade airports across the Philippines, with a particular focus on gateways to key tourist destinations. This initiative, championed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., aims to significantly boost the country’s tourism sector and stimulate economic growth.
DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon confirmed the immediate commencement of these efforts, stating, “Next week, we will begin the expansion of Siargao Airport. In the coming year, Siargao Airport will be improved, expanded, and beautified.” Secretary Dizon announced the 2025 Post-State of the Nation Address (SONA) discussions in San Juan City.
Secretary Dizon emphasized that similar improvements will extend to various airports and other transportation facilities throughout Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, especially those serving tourist areas. He highlighted President Marcos Jr.’s direct order to prioritize these enhancements, recognizing their crucial role in attracting more international investors and tourists.
As part of these ongoing efforts, Secretary Dizon cited the current improvements at Godofredo P. Ramos Airport in Caticlan, Aklan, which serves as the primary access point for tourists visiting Boracay Island. President Marcos Jr. recently led the groundbreaking ceremony for the airport’s new passenger terminal building on July 14th.
“The government is working to open the Philippines to more global investors and international tourists by upgrading and constructing airports nationwide, providing direct international access to key destinations beyond Manila,” said President Marcos Jr. during the Caticlan groundbreaking.
Secretary Dizon underscored the broader benefits of these public infrastructure projects, noting that the rehabilitation and construction of airports not only contribute to the general economy but also create numerous jobs and business opportunities for local communities. “Many jobs and livelihoods are created, improving the lives of our countrymen there. We need to improve the infrastructure,” he added.
