Philippine rail industry and academe unite to drive digitalization and innovation

The Philippine National Railways (PNR), in partnership with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) through the Philippine Railways Institute (PRI), is strengthening its collaboration with the academic sector to accelerate research and development for the country’s railway system.

During the Philippine Railways Institute Research Advancement and Proposal Ideation Day (PRI-RAPID) held on Thursday, July 31, PNR General Manager Deovanni S. Miranda highlighted the critical role of academic institutions. “The rail industry needs to adapt and evolve to meet the demands of digitalization,” he stated. “This can happen with the contributions of the education sector, which are essential in shaping the future of railway development and transportation through research.”

The event, spearheaded by DOTr Undersecretary and PRI Acting Executive Director Usec. Anneli R. Lontoc and the PRI’s Research and Development Division brought together educators from various academic institutions, alongside representatives from railway operators, including the PNR. The primary goal was to foster a collaborative environment and generate potential research initiatives that will drive sustainable innovation.

This initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to strengthening knowledge-based progress and sustainable innovation. The partnership between the railway industry and the academe is a crucial step towards enhancing the quality and relevance of research within the Philippine railway system, ultimately paving the way for a more modern and efficient rail network.

The Philippine National Railways is the state-owned railway company of the Philippines, operating services on Luzon. PNR is dedicated to providing safe, reliable, and affordable transportation to the Filipino people.
