July sees turbulence in global air travel 

A new Cirium report reveals that July was a challenging month for global air travel, with flight cancellations rising to 58,239, a 5% increase from May. The data highlights a significant rise in disruptions across North America and Europe, while the Middle East, Africa, and Asia-Pacific regions demonstrated impressive operational stability.

The Cirium data, which tracks on-time performance (OTP) and cancellations, shows a stark contrast in regional results. North America saw the most significant impact, with cancellations surging by 42%. Europe followed, with a 30% increase, and Latin America with a 21% rise.

In a remarkable display of operational success, the Middle East and Africa region decreased flight cancellations by a massive 70%. The Asia-Pacific region also showed strong stability, with a slight 2% decrease in cancellations.

Top Performers in July

Despite the challenges, several airlines and airports delivered exceptional results, demonstrating resilience and operational excellence.

Global Leaders:

  • Aeromexico emerged as the new global leader with an OTP of 89.81%.
  • Azul, Saudia, Qatar Airways, and LATAM Airlines also secured top positions.

Regional Standouts:

  • North America: Delta Air Lines reclaimed the top spot with an OTP of 76.97%.
  • Asia-Pacific: IndiGo is the new leader, improving its OTP by nearly six points.
  • Europe: Icelandair maintained its position as the regional leader.
  • Latin America: Copa Airlines reclaimed the top spot with an OTP of 90.11%.
  • Middle East & Africa: Royal Jordanian is the new regional leader, improving its OTP by almost 12 points.

Leading Airports:

  • Large Airports: Kempegowda International Airport led the category with an OTP of 92.35%.
  • Medium Airports: Tocumen International Airport is the new frontrunner.
  • Small Airports: Santos Dumont Airport took the lead in the Small Airports category.
