DOTr orders Sumitomo to immediately address MRT-3 signaling issues

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has directed Sumitomo Corporation, the maintenance provider for the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3), to resolve issues with the train’s signaling system immediately. The order follows a recent incident that caused significant delays and long queues for commuters.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon stated that the directive is meant to prevent future disruptions and ensure the continuous, smooth operation of the MRT-3, a goal that has also been emphasized by the President. The secretary noted a specific malfunction in the signaling system that occurred around 9 a.m. yesterday, which delayed train trips and caused a lengthy queue, particularly at the Cubao station.

“We saw the queue, especially in Cubao, where the passengers were in a very long queue when there was an emergency,” Secretary Dizon said. “That’s why Sumitomo should fix this problem in the signaling system immediately, so that what happened yesterday won’t happen again.”

The technical issue was resolved within an hour of the incident, but the DOTr is pushing for a permanent solution to prevent any further inconvenience to the public.
