Grab Philippines, DICT, DOTr, and Megaworld announce milestone in drone delivery pilot study

Grab Philippines, in collaboration with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), the Department of Transportation (DOTr), and property developer Megaworld Corporation, announced significant progress in the nation’s first pilot study on drone-powered commercial delivery. The initiative aims to revolutionize urban logistics by integrating unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to bypass Metro Manila’s notorious traffic, ensuring faster and more efficient fulfillment of time-sensitive deliveries.

The pilot, which commenced in late June, is actively testing a hybrid delivery model that strategically combines the strengths of both drone technology and Grab’s extensive network of delivery partners. In this model, Grab’s delivery-partners handle the critical first and last-mile segments—from merchant pickup to the final customer drop-off—while drones manage the “middle-mile” flight between dedicated drone landing stations at two Megaworld properties.

“We are incredibly optimistic about the early findings of this pilot,” said Ronald Roda, Managing Director of Grab Philippines. “This is not just about showcasing innovation; it’s about a tangible exploration of how drone technology can be a practical, scalable solution to the logistical challenges of a bustling urban environment. The data we are collecting will be instrumental in co-creating a framework that benefits consumers, merchants, and our delivery-partners, while also supporting the government’s vision for a modern transport ecosystem.”

The pilot’s controlled setting allows the partner organizations to meticulously evaluate operational, technical, and regulatory factors. Insights gained will be shared with the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) to help inform the development of a comprehensive and safe regulatory framework for future commercial drone operations.

DICT Undersecretary Christina Faye Condez-de Sagon highlighted the collaborative spirit of the project. “This public-private partnership is a prime example of how we can responsibly harness technology for national digital transformation. The pilot provides a valuable opportunity to ensure that new technologies are deployed safely and in a way that truly serves the public.”

Tyrone Tan, Cluster General Manager of Megaworld Lifestyle Malls, added, “Our participation in this pilot aligns with Megaworld’s commitment to building smart, future-ready communities. Offering a sustainable and efficient delivery option enhances the services we provide to our residents, office workers, and mall partners, and contributes to a more forward-thinking urban lifestyle.”

The pilot program underscores the potential for drone logistics to transform deliveries not only in densely populated areas but also in underserved, remote areas of the Philippines’ archipelagic geography. If the study proves viable, Grab plans to explore expanding the initiative to additional locations and establishing dedicated “drone corridors” to alleviate pressure on road networks.
