The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced that several experienced French railway operators and other firms have shown significant interest in the operations and maintenance of the Philippines’ North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) System. The interest was expressed during a recent market sounding activity held in Paris, France.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has directed the DOTr to explore partnerships with foreign and private entities to ensure the successful management of the 147-kilometer railway.
“We are hearing very encouraging interest from private firms and other countries. The market is very interested in participating and eventually bidding for the NSCR concession,” said Transportation Undersecretary for Railways Timothy John Batan.
To attract the most qualified international partners, the DOTr is committed to addressing any concerns they may have. Undersecretary Batan noted that the companies that attended the market sounding event operate some of the world’s most extensive railway networks and are seriously considering participation in the NSCR project.
Philippine Chargé d’Affaires in France, Eric Gerardo Tamayo, highlighted the potential benefits of partnering with French rail experts. “France has one of the most well-developed railway networks in the world, with various options including subways, regional railways, and high-speed rail. Their systems are truly commuter-friendly,” Tamayo stated.
This collaboration aims to leverage France’s deep expertise in developing efficient and reliable public transportation systems to enhance the NSCR, a key infrastructure project for the Philippines.
The NSCR is a 147-kilometer railway project that will connect Metro Manila to the provinces of Bulacan and Laguna, providing a modern, safe, and reliable transportation option for commuters in the Greater Manila Area.
