The Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) has announced a significant change to its ticketing system, eliminating the need for form-filling to make the fare discount process for students, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities (PWDs) faster and more convenient.
The new streamlined process was revealed during an inspection at the LRT-2 Antipolo station by Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon. The change applies to LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 lines and is part of a broader effort to improve the commuter experience and enhance efficiency.
Under the updated system, eligible passengers are no longer required to fill out a form to avail of the 50% fare discount. Instead, they simply need to present a valid ID at the Passenger Assistance Office (PAO) or Teller booths when purchasing a Single Journey Ticket (SJT). This adjustment is expected to drastically reduce transaction times and shorten queues at stations.
Existing Senior Citizens and PWDs with concessionary Beep cards can continue to use their current cards. For students, a new concessionary student card will be made available starting in September, with Af Payments Inc., the Beep card contractor, setting up application booths at LRT-2 stations.
In a forward-looking move, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) will also coordinate with the Commission on Audit (COA) to explore digital solutions for data collection. This initiative aligns with the government’s ongoing push for modernization and efficiency in public services.
The LRTA reaffirms its commitment to providing accessible, passenger-friendly, and efficient services for all commuters. This simplified discount process is a key step in ensuring a smoother and more hassle-free journey for the public.
