Following a directive from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to create a commuter-centric transportation system, Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez has announced that the Department of Transportation (DOTr) will continue prioritizing the welfare of commuters. In a turnover ceremony this Wednesday, Lopez reaffirmed his commitment to building on the initiatives of former Secretary Vince Dizon.
Lopez emphasized the importance of understanding the daily challenges commuters face by actively engaging with them on the ground. “If we really want to solve and address the problems of commuters, we have to go out because work is on the road,” he stated. Lopez, who has worked closely with Dizon, noted that their field visits highlighted the urgent need to prioritize the interests and well-being of the public.
Accountability and Safety on the Road
In addition to focusing on commuter welfare, Acting Secretary Lopez stressed the importance of accountability for motorists and drivers to ensure road safety for everyone, including pedestrians. “We need to hold erring motorists and drivers on the road accountable,” Lopez said, adding, “We won’t stop this.” This focus on enforcement aims to make the nation’s roads safer and more orderly.
A Vote of Confidence
Former Secretary Vince Dizon expressed his full confidence in Lopez’s ability to lead the department. Dizon revealed that when President Marcos Jr. asked for a recommendation, he put forward only one name: Giovanni Lopez. “The President trusts you. The cabinet trusts you. The DOTr people trust you and I’m sure the people will trust you,” Dizon said, praising Lopez’s capabilities and commitment. Lopez also thanked Dizon for his work in overhauling the transportation system and accelerating major projects for the benefit of commuters.
