Taiwanese sweetener company’s PH unit taps First Gen for supply of clean energy

The local subsidiary of Taiwan Fructose Co. Ltd. (Taiwan Fructose), a global supplier of various sweeteners, has tapped First Gen Corporation (First Gen), the country’s leading renewable energy (RE) provider, for supply of geothermal power to run the Taiwanese company’s production and logistics facility in Batangas as part of its sustainability initiatives.

Under an agreement signed by officials of First Gen and Taiwan Fructose (Philippines) last Aug. 27, First Gen will supply the facility of Taiwan Fructose inside the First Philippine Industrial Park (FPIP) in Batangas with electricity from the Bacon-Manito (Bac-Man) geothermal complex in the Bicol region under the government’s Green Energy Option Program.

The Bac-Man geothermal complex is owned and operated by First Gen subsidiary Energy Development Corporation, the world’s largest vertically integrated geothermal company.

Taiwan Fructose’s facility at the FPIP manufactures for the export market various sweetening products, such as glucose and fructose syrups, and other sweet additives for a wide range of food and beverage products, as well as health supplements.

“Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source that can run at baseload capacity which is ideal for industries that require stable 24/7 power supply with a lower carbon footprint. We are pleased to support Taiwan Fructose in its journey towards sustainability and decarbonization,” said First Gen Chief Customer Engagement Officer Carlo Vega.

Lopez-led First Gen owns and operates through its own subsidiaries 28 power plants running on RE resources, such as geothermal, wind, solar and hydro. Spread across the country, these RE facilities have more than 1,600 megawatts of combined capacity.

First Gen, in partnership with Prime Infrastructure Capital, also has a significant stake in four gas-fired power plants in Batangas with a total capacity of 2,017 MW. This diversified portfolio of renewable and low carbon generating facilities helps assure the country’s energy security.
